Medical and Legal Advocacy

You are not alone! KCCASA + ISAS advocates are here to support you 24/7/365.

Our work on behalf of and with the survivors of sexual assault and human trafficking is referred to as advocacy. Advocates are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide confidential, free, personalized assistance to sexual assault and human trafficking survivors in our 2 advocacy fields – Medical and Legal.

Medical Advocacy

KCCASA + ISAS Medical Advocates are always available to support survivors, their families, and friends during a visit to the emergency room for a medical examination or evidence collection. Kankakee and Iroquois County hospital emergency room staff will call our hotline to page an Advocate to the emergency room when a victim seeks medical care. If the hospital does not contact an Advocate, please call our hotline at 815-932-3322.

Staff advocates can also accompany clients to any follow-up medical appointments, help them receive reimbursement for medical costs associated with the crime, and answer sexual assault and human trafficking related medical questions about:

    • Medical exams
    • Evidence collection (Rape Kit)
    • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs or STDs)
    • Pregnancy and emergency contraception
    • Medications
    • Follow-up medical care
    • Crime Victims Compensation through the Illinois Attorney General’s Office
    • KCCASA + ISAS services
    • Referrals

SANE Programs

Medical treatment and evidence collection following a sexual assault can be provided at hospital emergency departments. Locally, Presence St. Mary’s, Riverside, and Iroquois Memorial emergency departments provide this service. Additionally, both Kankakee hospitals have staff with specialized training in treating survivors of sexual assault – SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners).

Legal Advocacy

Navigating the legal system can be lengthy and confusing. KCCASA + ISAS’s Legal Advocates are there with support and information for survivors of sexual assault and human trafficking and their family each step of the way.

Legal Advocates walk with survivors throughout the police and courtroom procedures, maintain an awareness of the status of each case, monitor the case throughout its legal proceedings, go to court with survivors (or for those who cannot attend), and keep survivors current on changes to their case.

Our goal is to help the system work more effectively for you and your family. Like all KCCASA + ISAS services, Legal advocacy is confidential and free of charge.

Legal Advocates are available to answer questions about:

    • Reporting to law enforcement
    • Crime victim’s rights
    • Statute of limitations
    • Criminal justice proceedings
    • Court process
    • Sex offender registration
    • Civil No Contact Orders
    • Orders of Protection
    • Automated victim notification (AVN) 1-866-566-8439
    • Crime Victims Compensation through the Illinois Attorney General’s Office
    • Victim impact statements
    • Victim Services Unit of the Illinois Department of Corrections
    • Professional training for legal and medical personnel
    • Multidisciplinary team response to sexual assault and human trafficking
