PreK through 2nd Grade: Staying Safe Program

Staying Safe introduces the concept of personal safety by teaching children basic body and stranger safety rules.

  • Teddy bears in bathing suits are used to teach children about safe and unsafe touches. Areas of the body are referred to as “bathing suit areas”.   It is explained to the children that there are only three reasons why a person would need to touch their “bathing suit areas”…if they need help (i.e. getting dressed, in the bathtub), if they are sick (i.e. when they go to the doctor’s office), or if they are hurt. This is presented as “The Touching Rule”.
  • It is shared with the students that you can say “No” to Bad Touches and  to recognize the difference between good touches and bad touches
  • The children are encouraged not to keep secrets that make them feel scared and to tell a safe grown-up if they are ever made to feel uncomfortable.
  • It is emphasized to the children that it is never the child’s fault if a grown-up breaks the rules and hurts the child.
  • A separate presentation on Stranger Safety that encourages children to recognize who a stranger is and some guidelines to keeping safe is also available. There is also an introduction as to who can be a helpful adult if the child gets separated from their caregiver.

Handouts include: Coloring pages explaining to the children that their body belongs to them.  The coloring page also includes tips for both children and parents.  The children are also given a safety sticker.
