Counseling

The goal of counseling at KC-CASA/ISAS is to provide support, empowerment and recovery to victims of sexual assault and their families.  Clients may choose to receive individual, family, couple and/or group counseling.  In addition, confidential crisis counseling and telephone counseling are provided to both clients and anonymous callers.  Support groups are offered to adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, teens, and parents.
KC-CASA/ISAS offers free counseling for children under 18 and any significant others associated with that child case.  Adults are not charged for the first 10 sessions and the remainder of their sessions are charged on a sliding scale based on their income level.   No services are ever denied for inability to pay.
KC-CASA/ISAS believes that it is important for victims and significant others to have access to high quality counseling to heal from the assault or abuse regardless of their income.
While the KC-CASA/ISAS provides most counseling services on-site, outreach programs to area nursing homes and schools allow services to extend to those that may not otherwise have access to counseling for sexual victimization.  Counseling services are provided in both Kankakee County and Iroquois County offices.

The impact of sexual assault can affect a victim’s life in many ways.  Victims of sexual assault/abuse often experience excessive feelings of sadness, anger, fear, vulnerability and guilt.  These issues are confusing and can cause a victim to struggle in many areas of their life, both personally and in relationships with others.

KC-CASA/ISAS provides counseling services to help lessen and alleviate the impact of this experience.   Counseling addresses the psychological and emotional needs of individuals and families whose lives have been impacted by sexual violence.  Counselors help clients learn about how the sexual assault and abuse impacted their feelings, relationships, self-esteem, and ability to function.  Survivors of sexual assault commonly receive help in counseling with such issues as

  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Rape Trauma Syndrome
  • Depression
  • Fears/Anxiety
  • Nightmares
  • Eating disorders
  • Self injury
  • Dissociation
  • Trust and safety issues
  • Self esteem
  • Relationship issues with families and intimate partners

Sexual assault and abuse are very difficult topics for people to talk about and many victims put off attending counseling for that reason.  Clients can choose a wide variety of ways to express themselves in therapy, including art, play and sand-tray therapy.  These types of therapy can often make the process easier because survivors do not have to use words to express their feelings about the sexual assault or abuse.  Counseling helps clients seek relief from symptoms, process their feelings and regain hope.  Clients can learn new coping strategies to use in all areas of their life.
